Battery is the necessity in home energy storage system, which stores the energy generated by the solar panels and power energy when needed. Battery come in multiple forms and operate on multiple principles. There are four main storage battery types: Sealed Lead Acid (SLA), Flooded Lead Acid (FLA), Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM), and Gel, each with their own set of unique properties. When choosing batteries attention should be made to lifespan, technology type, and the cost.

Battery Types

Sealed Lead Acid (SLA) Battery

Sealed lead-acid batteries are the most common battery type with the oldest and mature technology. SLA battery is designed to reduce reduce maintenance, reduce explosive risk, and foul odor that can be created by other battery types. It is also known as a valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) battery. It is commonly used in backup power systems, emergency lighting, and security systems.

Flooded Lead Acid (FLA) Battery

Flooded lead-acid batteries are the type of battery that  liquid electrolyte that can move freely in the cell compartments. FLA battery requires periodic water addition, equalization, and specific gravity measurement. It is also known as a wet cell or liquid electrolyte battery. It is commonly used in engine starting, deep cycle, and solar applications.

Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) Battery

AGM battery has a glass mat separator that absorbs the electrolyte and prevents it from spilling or leaking. It is a variant of the SLA battery that has higher performance and durability. It is commonly used in high-performance engine starting, power sports, and storage applications.

Gel Battery

Gel Battery has a gel-like electrolyte that is immobilized by adding silica or other agents. It is also a variant of the SLA battery that has better resistance to vibration, shock, and temperature extremes. It is commonly used in medical equipment, wheelchairs, and marine applications

Deep Cycle Battery for Solar Storage

As a deep cycle battery supports to store and discharge electricity for a long time, making it suitable for off-grid or hybrid solar systems.

When using batteries for solar panels as part of a home solar system, you’re able to store the excess electricity your panels produce instead of sending that energy back into the grid. Electricity will be sent to the grid if your batteries are fully charged and your panels are still producing energy.

Do You Need the Battery Storage?

Not every solar power needs battery storage. If you want to live off the grid or where grid power is not stable, you will need a solar battery.

Here are some situations where you may need a deep cycle battery:

Power marine boat’s electricity system with a deep cycle battery

Power RV’s appliances with a deep cycle battery

Provide backup power for home or business in case of grid outage or emergencies

To store the excess solar power for off-grid system
