Four Tips to Buying A Battery Energy Storage System

BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) has become a trending in today's solar market which enables electric grids to become more flexible and resilient.

So what is a battery energy storage system?

A battery energy storage system is a system that uses batteries to store electrical energy. It typically consists of multiple battery cells connected together to provide large amounts of energy storage. These systems are used to store energy from renewable energy sources like solar and wind, or from the electricity grid during off-peak hours. The stored energy can then be used during times of high demand or when renewable energy is not available.

Some key components of a battery energy storage system include:

• Battery cells - The individual electrochemical cells that store energy. Common types used include lithium-ion, lead-acid, sodium-sulfur, etc.

• Battery management system(BMS) - Controls the charging and discharging of the batteries while monitoring their state of charge and health. It helps to optimize performance and ensure safety.

• Power conversion system - Converts the AC power from the grid or renewable sources to DC for charging the batteries, and converts the DC power from the batteries back to AC for usage.

Here are some tips to buy a solar energy storage system:

• Determine your energy needs. Calculate your average energy usage and how much backup power you need. This will help determine the size and capacity of the storage system.

• Choose a battery type. The most common options are lithium-ion, lead-acid, and saltwater batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are the most efficient but also the most expensive. Lead-acid batteries are cheaper but larger and heavier. Saltwater batteries are non-toxic and long-lasting but currently more expensive.

• Consider the inverter. The inverter converts the DC power from the solar panels and batteries to AC power for your home. Make sure the inverter is compatible with your battery system and can handle the power needs of your home.

• Calculate costs. The costs include the batteries, inverter, installation fees, and maintenance costs. Factor in any tax credits or incentives you may be eligible for.
