What is DC-DC UPS and AC-AC UPS

2023-03-13 10:00

UPS, uninterruptible power source, is an electrical apparatus that provide emergency power to a load when the input power source or mains power fails. It is generally divided as two types, DC-DC UPS and AC-AC UPS.

What is DC-DC UPS?

DC-DC UPS battery backup is included with two components, rectifier and storage battery. When the mains power is on, both the loads and the battery are charged by AC power through the rectifier. When mains power fails or the rectifier goes wrong, the input power source is automatically changed to the battery. In order words, the electricity flow is from battery to loads.

What is AC-AC UPS?

AC-AC UPS battery backup concludes three components, rectifier, battery and power inverter. AC supply power to the loads through rectifier and inverter, and charge the battery through rectifier. When the mains power fails or the rectifier goes wrong, the electricity flow is from battery to loads.

Comparison between DC-DC UPS and AC-AC UPS

  • Under the same conditions, the carrying capacity of DC UPS is stronger than that of AC UPS.

  • Under the same conditions, the efficiency of DC UPS is higher than that of AC UPS.

  • Under the same conditions, the reliability of DC UPS is higher than that of AC UPS.

  • The price of DC UPS is cheaper than that of AC UPS.

  • In case of multi-source input, DC UPS can realize true zero-interrupt conversion, while AC UPS cannot realize true zero-interrupt conversion.

How to select UPS

Check the power consumption (W) of the device that will be backed up by the UPS, and select a UPS that has an output capacity greater than that amount.
